This Thanksgiving, 100 patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Louisville received something to help make the holiday a little easier: a fully cooked Thanksgiving turkey.
The turkeys were handed out by brothers Tommy and Alex Gift (’97 and ’00), who were inspired by the example of their mother Mary Jane Gift, who died in 2010 following a 20-year struggle with breast cancer. The brothers established the Mary Jane Gift Quality of Life Fund in her honor.
According to the Gifts, the fund exists “to help patients being treated for cancer to remember to embrace the lessons our Mom left behind. Stay Positive. Be thankful. Step away from it all. The fund can help do this by providing simple gifts to patients that could help improve their quality of life, even if it’s for a short period of time.”
